Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

Information on spider veins and varicose veins

Telangiectasias (spider veins), reticular veins, and larger varicose veins in the legs are not the same condition. The treatment option varies according to vessel diameter, location, symptoms, underlying venous insufficiency, and the person’s health status. If pain, swelling, a sudden one-sided change, a skin ulcer, or suspected thrombosis is present, medical assessment is required before an aesthetic procedure.

A 2023 network meta-analysis showed that laser and sclerotherapy options may be effective for spider veins and that hyperpigmentation, intravascular clots, the development of new fine vessels, pain, and other adverse effects vary according to the method used. No single method is superior for every vessel. Vascular surgery or radiology assessment may be required for larger varicose veins.
