Information on biostimulator treatments
Biostimulators are injectable products that aim to stimulate the body's own collagen production in the treated tissue over time. Rather than adding volume directly like fillers, they aim for a tissue response that develops over weeks and months. In our clinic, products containing PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid), PCL/PCLA (polycaprolactone-based products), PDLLA (Lenisna) and CaHA (calcium hydroxylapatite) are used; which one is suitable is decided at the examination.
Treatment details
Duration: About 30–45 minutes; time for numbing cream may be added.
Who it is for: Healthy adults with mild to moderate facial volume loss, skin laxity or reduced skin quality.
Number of sessions: Depending on the product, usually 1–3 sessions, 4–8 weeks apart. The final plan is set by the physician after the examination.
Differences between products
PLLA and PDLLA are absorbable polymers that work through a tissue response; the effect develops slowly over several months. PCL-based products aim for some initial volume and a later tissue response. CaHA microspheres provide support and aim to stimulate collagen production. The product is chosen according to the area, skin structure and expectations.
Evidence and expectations
Systematic reviews have reported improvement in facial appearance and relatively long-lasting effects with PLLA and CaHA; however, the studies used different products and protocols. The result develops slowly, varies between people and is not permanent.
Possible risks
Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common. Depending on the product, nodules or papules and, rarely, granuloma, infection and vascular occlusion may occur. Whether massage is advised afterwards depends on the product and is explained by the physician.
Who may not be suitable?
Active infection at the treatment site, allergy to product ingredients, pregnancy and breastfeeding, uncontrolled autoimmune disease and a tendency to scarring are assessed separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is a biostimulator a filler?
No. A filler adds volume directly; a biostimulator aims to create a tissue response over time. Some products aim for both.
When is the effect seen?
The tissue response develops over weeks and months; assessment is usually made after 2–3 months.
What is Lenisna?
Lenisna is a biostimulator product containing PDLLA; whether it is used is decided at the examination.
