Glutathione

A consultation on the limits of evidence and safety for the cosmetic use of glutathione.

Glutathione

Evidence-based information on glutathione

Glutathione is an antioxidant naturally found in the body. Intravenous glutathione for cosmetic purposes has not been proven to lighten skin color or provide ‘detoxification.’ A 2025 systematic review reported that only one small placebo-controlled study was available for intravenous use and that this use was not considered appropriate because of efficacy and safety concerns.

In addition to pain, bruising, and infection related to venous access, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, and liver-related adverse effects have been reported; long-term safety data are insufficient. This appointment is only for a physician’s assessment of the available evidence, the products the person uses, and the person’s medical condition; it is not a cosmetic injection or a promise of results.

This text is intended for general information and is not personalized diagnostic or treatment advice. Eligibility is determined after a medical history and examination. Outcomes may vary from person to person; a specific result cannot be guaranteed.
