Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT)

The possible role of acoustic wave therapy in the appearance of cellulite and the limitations of the evidence.

Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT)

Information on acoustic wave therapy (AWT)

AWT is a device-based procedure that delivers mechanical acoustic waves to the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Cellulite is a multifactorial condition characterized by dimpling and irregularity of the skin surface. AWT is not a method for ‘fat burning,’ weight loss, or the permanent elimination of cellulite.

Although systematic reviews have reported some improvements in the appearance of cellulite with acoustic/shock wave procedures, the studies are small, the protocols differ, and follow-up periods are short; no method has been conclusively established. Discomfort may occur during the procedure, followed by redness, tenderness, or bruising. Bleeding tendency, anticoagulant use, active infection, pregnancy, and vascular or nerve problems in the treatment area are assessed separately.

This text is intended for general information and is not personalized diagnostic or treatment advice. Eligibility is determined after a medical history and examination. Outcomes may vary from person to person; a specific result cannot be guaranteed.
